Tell us about yourself and your work
I’ve been been in the beauty industry since 2004 and started focusing more on my makeup artistry in 2016. My style and my passion is all about creating bespoke, bold and colorful looks. I specialize in makeup for non-traditional weddings and events, especially for people who don’t feel like there’s space for them in the traditional beauty world. Many of my clients feel there’s kind of a one size fits all standard in a sense, especially when it comes to weddings. That’s where I come in! Whether it’s bold, expressive, edgy or simply authentic to their unique style, I love being a part of helping every single client look and feel their best on one of their most memorable (and most photographed) days of their lives!
How do you help a bride discover her wedding day look?
It’s a collaboration. I love getting to know my clients, their personal style, what makes them feel good, how they want to feel. I’m a firm believer that you should still feel like you on your wedding day, just amped up! We look at inspo pics and Pinterest boards together, talk about outfits, accessories, what vibes they’re going for and what kind of statement they want to make, and then I’ll customize a look for them. It’s never a copy, paste, repeat kind of situation.
What does a typical day look like for you?
No two days are ever the same which is what I love! Wedding days are typically early mornings, packing up my kit, long drives to interesting locations, and spending the day on site glamming up my clients and their crew. I love when I get to go someplace new. I’ll always try to stop at a funky local store or find a trail to explore before heading home. On non-wedding days, I’m doing wedding trials or working on creative shoots, doing one-on-one lessons, answering client emails or planning looks for upcoming projects. There’s always something fun brewing to keep me busy. I’m also a permanent makeup artist so I schedule those appointments in during the week.
Are there any makeup trends that you noticed for brides?
Lately, I’m seeing more clients coming back to color which I feel like took a little break while natural glam was having its moment. Whether it’s graphic liner, colorful smoked out looks or even interesting textures, there’s definitely more creativity happening. I’m also seeing more people ditch the idea of “this is how I’m supposed to look on my wedding day” in favor of “this is how I WANT to look”. People are really starting to embrace their own style and letting go of those old traditions and expectations which is exactly what I live for. And of course my favorite request is always skin that looks like skin! Glowy, dewy, fresh, with maybe some cute little faux freckles.
How much time would you recommend allocating for wedding makeup?
I always recommend doing a trial before the big day. Those usually run about two hours and really help me get to know the client, their skin, likes, dislikes and give us time to play with different looks. For the wedding day itself, I create a schedule that allows about 40 minutes per makeup application and about an hour for the person getting married. I also always build in an extra 30 minutes at the end of the schedule for touchups to make sure everyone is looking extra fresh before I pack up.
